Got some good press here in Edmonton about beaching the boat/ship/vessel/whatEVER.
Next time could you please be in the middle of dry land when you decide to have a major wacko adventure? Many thanks =)
Speaking off modl, way past time for an Edmonton gig. Blue Chair would be swell. Many more thanks =)

Hi Nathan,
I've just listened to "The Gauntlet" yet again. The more I listen, the more I hear. Since the first time I heard "Jewel of Paris" on this site I was moved. I've listened to it countless times but just yesterday it bowled me over. You have a gift. Keep up the great work.

Hi Nathan - I heard you on CBC and thought that you must know about a former colleague of mine (we were both at Cornell), Richard Feynman. What Richard valued most in life was curiosity and one of the things that aroused his curiosity was Tuva and throat singing. There are many web resources for him. I thought that I would mention this on the off chance that it would be news. Perhaps I'll be able to hear you in Winnipeg. I'll be here for two more years before retiring and moving to Ballantyne's Cove on Cape George. Mike

You were really awesome in St. John's back in April. I've become a huge fan since then. The Gauntlet is seriously one of my all-time favorite albums now. Honestly dude, you know how to write a song! Fingerprints....just unreal

I walked in on your performance in St. John's back in May (I think) this year. You were singing Carmerica, and I'll never forget it. I was given The Gauntlet as a gift since then. A true gift it was Nathan. It's the best disk I've ever heard my friend, honestly. You can write a song like it's nobodys business. Please come back to NL sometime. Your music gets me where I want to go

I heard you at the Vancouver Folk Festival on Saturday and bought your CD that afternoon. As of today (Tuesday) iTunes tells me I've played Moving Mountains 44 times. Need I say more? I LOVE it!!! Thank you.

A friend who was at the Vancouver event sent me a link to the YouTube videos. Truly awesome. Your material, voice, and personality evoke the same feelings that your dad did--without being a clone of Stan, which many seem to expect (unfortunately). You bring your own resonance to his songs, which is great. Your material is very enjoyable and engaging. I think you'll be joining that select group of well known Canadian singers that stretch back to the era of Ian and Sylvia.
Looking forward to seeing you live in the near future (Canmore next year?). Have to go listen to "The Gauntlet"...:-)

I just saw you at the Vancouver Island Musicfest. I don't know of another performer who has rushed out into the audience to see if he can help a person having a medical emergency and then deliver a dynamite set afterwards-all this and throat-singing, too. You're a fine man and a great musician, Nathan! (I was stage manager at Woodlands stage, thanks for the taste of the uiscebeagh)

July 12, 2010
thank you so much for the throat singing workshop! I really enjoyed meeting you and your family and also getting acquainted with the tune stick (is that name right?..the dulcimer- like instrument).
My friend that I was telling you about is Randy Raine Reusch so you have it in writing.
We played dulcimer together in the 70's and Randy went on to explore his love for world instruments and creation of new sounds.
His band is Asza.
http://www.asza.com
Musical scores: If you go to the "scores" tab..you will recognize the style perhaps.
Randy had the bounty of knowing John Cage whose way of looking at music, sound, and the writing of the scores, were a definite influence in his (Randy's) work.
Hope you can meet Randy one day..I can see you both getting together on something. I will tell him I met you.
Have fun in Vancouver! :-)
Sincerely,
Ecenith

I'm a transplanted maritimetuck out on the west coast of Canada. Today while searching for your fathers music on iTunes (feeling particularly home sick for my father who is out east) I discovered your voice, well all I can say is WOW. I was raised on your fathers music, his experiences, and social views of the world as wonderful as they are they are from a different area than my own. Now I am happy to say I have found a voice in your music . One that is current and relative to my time. Thank you for keeping your fathers spirit alive but also thank you for keeping your own. Hoping to see you out in BC.

I just wanted to share a short story.
In November 1982, Stan put on a concert in Pinawa. The Friday night we were to drive out, there was a snowstorm and we didn't want to take the chance driving out. Little did I know I would never again see him playing a concert.
Stan played on Saturday night. After the concert, he went over to the friends we were supposed to stay with; Roli and Terri and had a few beers there. Since we couldn't be there Roli asked Stan to sign a poster to me, which he did.
For many years, I could not find it in our house. Three years ago, when I separated from my husband and sold the house, I found the poster. I had it framed and it proudly sits in dining room today.
I regretted to this day missing that concert. Up until now, I have been unable to attend either yours or Garnets concerts: it was just too hard. I have decided that the next concert you play here in Winnipeg, I will attend.
Finally, we saw Stan perform in different venues including folk festivals in Edmonton and Winnipeg. I used to do a lot of B&W photography and gave Stan, at an Edmonton folk festival, a couple of photos of him I had developed . He was, as expected, very gracious.
I will treasure my poster forever. He will always be for me Canada's Greatest Folk Singer.
Yours Truly

I had the immense pleasure of meeting Nathan's father at one of his coffee house concerts he held at the waterfront in Toronto back in 1978. I would like to say that Nathan's style and voice are so much like Stan's and I want to wish him good fortune in his career. I only wish that he could perform in my area in Richmond, Virginia. I have seen Garnet Rogers perform at a coffee house in Ashland, Virginia and can only hope that one day Nathan may grace us with his presence and voice.

Hello Nathan
There are no dates in your calendar, so we all hope you are taking a wee pause to refresh and enjoying time home with the family.
If you are in the process of lining up new entries for the calendar, well the Edmonton Folk Music Festival is a goodie in August. So is The Blue Chair Cafe any time.
Hope to hear and see you round these parts soon. Be well, blessings in heaps. EF

Hi Nathan,
I hear you are headed to the Yellow Canoe in Merrickville. I also heard that they are SOLD OUT! Drat! We had so much wanted to meet you and hear your music! I am the fellow who got in touch with Ariel about my Father's tombstone. We are deeply appreciative of her generosity. Please keep Eastern Ontario in your musical orbit! Hopefully you'll have a chance to update your frontpage as it makes reference to 2007 and I am certain you have kicked the dust from many years in between then and now! All the best! Best Wishes to Ariel, Garnet and all your family!

I grew up listening to Stan Rogers, The Rankin Family, Rita MacNeil, and an other assortment of East Coast music (I LOVE JIMMY FLYNN!). My Father comes from Glace Bay and I always stole his tapes to listen to and still have most of them today. I ended up converting my husband from Metallica to this stuff and he ended up discovering that Nathan Rogers followed in his Dad's footsteps and told me. Now I'm obsessed again! Not only that but he looks SO much like Stan and sounds so similar it's crazy! I LOVE IT! Thank you Nathan!

I've come late to you - didn't know you existed. Now that I know, I'm an instant fan.
You have the sound of your father, but you make your own unique vocal statement. I'm totally hooked.

Nathan,
Listening to Salt Spring radio on internet while sitting outside Washington DC this afternoon, I heard a voice I thought I knew singing a song I had never heard...and am both delighted and appalled to be only discovering your first two albums now, to say nothing of having missed your 2008 Falls Church VA concert.
First, thank you for your music, and the incredible work you put into your craft. Play long and prosper, and keep bringing your energy, grace and light into the world.
Second, I look forward to your return to DC...at the Birchmere, of course...and will join the list so as not to miss out.
Your father's music, and your uncle's, have both been vital markers in my life. I am glad to have the chance to get to know yours too.

How did you come to write Hibbing? It is a remarcably beautiful piece of work. My father and his father and his Father's Father were all hard rock miners. My Dad worked in the in the gold mines of Nova Scotia (Mt Uniacke( and later the Paymaster mine of South Porcupine (near Timmins) He left the underground to find safer and better work above ground. He never looked back. We lost him in 2007 It occurs to me I never thanked him for breaking the chain. The chain that bound my family to a hole in the ground. Your song touched me very deeply.
Thanks for that

We always greet eachother like old friends but that might be just due to our personalities. So I am one of the "girls" who was marrying my lady while you were marrying yours, allowing us to talk wedding plans at Winnipeg Folk and Canmore Folk Festival several years ago? Ring a bell? Plus we briefly chatted this year at Canmore?
Anyways it is Sunday afternoon, I am sewing, Kim is baking muffins and your CD is keeping us connected in our home. For that I thank you! Your latest CD takes me on many personal and shared journies of my personal past and the pasts of this land. As a teacher I try to move my students to places beyond our walls through storytelling and your music reminds me of why that is important. When you come back to Winnipeg, if you and your family would like a warm supper let us know, we would love to host, while sharing a few stories! Hope my ramble is making a little sense!

It was the first time I've had the pleasure of hearing you and it won't be the last (as long as you keep coming back to the East Coast) :-) Have been a huge fan of your Dad's for over 25 years and am thrilled to now know your music. I attended the Canadian Song Book tour last evening in Halifax. I knew to expect a treat - all of the performers are excellent - and I was right, we were blown away by the show. But I was a little disappointed. I wanted to hear more of Nathan's original work. Yes, he did a wonderful job with the songs he performed (I met up with a couple of friends during the intermission who asked why they had never heard of him before... like they had been left out of a wonderful secret) but I have both his CDs (thanks to his performance at Stanfest) and I was really hoping he would sing "Moving Mountains". I guess since he only did two of his own, his choices couldn't have been better! "Mary's Child" and the "Jewel of Paris" just mesmerize!

I took my husband tonight to the Fredericton Play House as an anniversary present. And what a marvelous treat it was, for both of us! Murray McLauchlan, Barney Bentall, Catherine MacLellan and Nathan Rogers! It was like sitting at a table with four different dishes with four different flavors and enjoying each one to the full! I immediately came home and did some Googleing as this was the first time I had the pleasure of listening to you. While I enjoyed listening to your recordings on the internet, I must say that the performance you did tonight is what I would like to have on CD. You sang with a much deeper tone and every song was delivered with such moving strength and impact! Absolutely wonderful! Thank you for the experience. I hope someday you will capture the way you sang tonight on a recording. Bravo!

Amazon finally came through with your second album, which is brilliant.
How do we get artists such as yourself, and you in particular, local play time on our radio ? That a cultural asset is overlooked in favor of much pop music is a travesty.
Also, want a third album. Please start working.
Thank you

Dear Nathan
After your performances at the Stan Roger's Festival this year you have left me thinking deeply about folk music and the importance of such well written works. Your song, the Living Sky is one such song. I may have the title incorrect so please forgive me. However I was overcome by the sheer beauty of the song, and its meaning.
To simply imply this song is beautiful leaves it only as a surface description. The song is also important, deeply touching at the situation may in our nation's military are living. Watching friends leave for "the Sandbox" and leaving behind wives, mothers and families, your song not only speaks volumes of the sacrifice, but more of the knowing of the sacrifice these who are left behind may be asked to pay. As the widow in your song goes out to commune with the Living Sky and He replies 'there is no anger here' I like so many around me found it hard to control our emotions. My girlfriend held me as I wept for lost friends and their families while we listened to you sing this song.
Sir, your song is not only beautiful, it is deeply important to many like myself. I believe it could, or should form the backbone of a collection of Canada's finest musical artists, like yourself, in the creation of a tribute album, not to war, but to those who stay home and pay the daily price of fearing the phone call or the visit at the door. And yes, even those who are left behind in the wake.
We deeply look forward to your performance here in Halifax
God Bless

Nathan,
I was introduced to your Dad's music unfortunately after his untimely passing. I was amazed at his voice and his music. I also quickly became fans of James Keelaghan and your Uncle Garnet. I've enjoyed seeing both in concert, however, I never knew about the gem that Stan left behind for his fans. I just discovered you tonight and I'm very thrilled to hear your renditions of old songs as well as your new songs. I'll certainly be back and look for your local appearances!

I hear a voice I know and love on the radio - Tom Coxworth's Folk Routes on CKUA. But I don't recognise the song. I'm all confused. Am I dreaming this? Did angels just haul me up to heaven? Then it dawns: the lad has FINALLY got the new CD out. =) I will be buying a copy as soon as you are back here to sell me one. P.S.You should have been booked for our Folk Fest - your dad and Garnet were here for the first one, Garnet was here for our 25th, YOU should be here to celebrate our 30th. Hi Nathan - saw you in Cromarty and had a fantastic evening. Thanks for travelling all the way to perform for us. I think your music is powerful and your lyrics are searching and honest (as well as fun). I have been telling my friends about you and I hope that one day they will have the opportunity to experience one of your great gigs. Best wishes for all that you do. Cheers, Nick.

Hi Nathan, I said last night at Mansfield (UK) that I would post a message, and here I am!
Lucy and I had such a great time at the gig. A fantastic, vibrant and fiery performance, we couldn't have wished for more. Thanks for your friendship (and Bob's) during the evening, so good to meet you at last. My only regret is that I left the Lowden in the car and didn't do a couple of songs myself! :-)
Thanks again for a great evening, and here's to the next CD.
Good thoughts and friendship from John and Lucy.

I and many other friends are looking forward to you coming back down towards the Washington DC area. Thanks for everything you give to us and thank you for pushing me to new levels in my own performance. You truly are an inspiration. Hope we meet again soon...

I don't know if you follow English soccer, I don't, but I thought you might like this story. Nigel Clough played for Liverpool, one of the most successful teams in Europe. His father, Brian, had retired young through injury but went on to be one of the best managers ever, managing Nottingham Forest. Nigel was asked did he ever tire of the comparisons. He said " Yes I am forever being told that I will never be as skillful as Brian, I'll never be as fast as Brian, I'll never be as intelligent as Brian, I'll never win as much as brian, I'll never be as successful as brian. and that is Brian talking" But that said, here is a story about one of your dads songs. Liam Clancy was described by Dylan as the greatest ballad singer ever. When he played with Tommy Makem on their own it was something special, much better than the twee Clancy Brothers gigs. In the mid 90s I saw them in concert I saw them in the Cork Opera House. The story in the song was always important to them. But only once ever did I see this happen. Liam silenced the audience, and asked them to listen, he felt the words of this song needed to be heard and understood. He spoke, unaccompanied the final verse and chorus of The Mary Ellen Carter. He then sang the song. It left a lasting impression on me. Years later as a merchant marine man, I adored it. Should you ever come to play in Ireland email me so I can bring all my ballad loving friends to come and enjoy, John Spillane( check out his stuff online) is alot like you, a great tradition. In Cork we have a shop called the living tradition, the songs are never static, the tradition always living.

Hi Nathan! Thanks for carrying your dads legacy with skill! I just bought your album and I must say, those who say that Stan´s better, are wrong. Your voice is unique and the world needs your music. Stan would have been insanely proud of you! Release a new album, please! Stan influenced my music and I think you can to! Thank you for doing what you are, you are an angel!
And by the way, sorry for the crappy English. Here in Sweden we are a bit left behind in the ways of learning other languages.
Yours Sincerely
//Oskar Berg, 19, from Uppsala, Sweden

Hi Nathan, I´m one of your fathers big fans. Stan's music touched me in ways that I could not imagine. I´ve just been exposed to your music, I´ve got to say what I think many has said to you before; you both look, and sound as your dad, which is a huge compliment, I think. You are a very talented musician, and I must give it to you, when i saw the performances of Puddler´s Tale and Hibbing, I was completely stunned. I´ve fallen for your music and just ordered your cd. Keep up your good work, another cd would be wonderful. Maybe throw in a few covers of Stan´s, but of course let your own songs dominate, because your voice is unique, and the music world is ready for a good album.
Thank you for doing what you are doing, and excuse me for the lousy English, not easy being a swede. Also thank you for keeping Stan´s legacy alive.
Best regards, Oscar, Uppsala, Sweden

Hi Nathan,
True to the word of my last message to you on Feb 10, 2008 my wife and I attended the "kitchen party" on March 21, 2009 in Rocky Mountain House,Alberta. You made my wife Mathilde and I feel very special when you dedicated Mary's child to us. As well, since I saw you about a year ago I have picked up my guiitar again and I wrote a few tunes. One in particular about my Grandfather who was lost at sea for three weeks in 1956 in hurricane Betsey off the coast of Nova Scotia. He has long since retired and he spends his days watching fishing boats out of his kitchen window in Sambro, Nova Scotia. Maybe one day when we meet again I will play that song for you to repay you for the great music you have created and played for us. Keep up the good work and God Bless.
